Tunney California Senatorial Campaign 1970"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last week I blogged my 1968 experience with national politics and campaign trains in my blog \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Robert F. Kennedy 1968.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d\u00c2\u00a0 A little more than two years later, I got the opportunity to put into action what I had learned when I was given the assignment to cover 1970 U.S. Senatorial candidate John V. Tunney.  \u00c2\u00a0  The press arrangements required reporter Fred Youmans and me to meet the train twelve miles south of Modesto in Turlock.\u00c2\u00a0 We identified ourselves to Tunney\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s campaign staff and security and got on board the historic observation car known as the \u00e2\u20ac\u0153El Dorado\u00e2\u20ac\u009d &#8212; built in 1924 by Union Pacific and previously used by President Franklin D Roosevelt.\u00c2\u00a0 I quickly got to work photographing candidate Tunney and actor Burt Lancaster.\u00c2\u00a0 All too soon, we were in Modesto. \u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/algolub.photoshelter.com\/gallery\/Tunney-1970\/G0000kvCYK5Fcle4\/\" target=\"_blank\">Photoshelter<\/a><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-190\" href=\"https:\/\/www.golubphoto.com\/blog\/?attachment_id=190\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-190\" title=\"001_Tunney\" src=\"https:\/\/www.golubphoto.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/001_Tunney.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"491\" height=\"575\" \/><\/a> The minute I jumped off the \u00e2\u20ac\u0153El Dorado,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d I hurried to get close under the observation deck.\u00c2\u00a0 Tunney was rousing the crowd with a rip-roaring speech and they were responding with enthusiastic cheers.  <a rel=\"attachment wp-att-191\" href=\"https:\/\/www.golubphoto.com\/blog\/?attachment_id=191\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-191\" title=\"002_Tunney\" src=\"https:\/\/www.golubphoto.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/002_Tunney.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"772\" height=\"575\" \/><\/a> Tunney\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s security guards were out in force because there were demonstrators from opponent Senator George Murphy\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s campaign.\u00c2\u00a0 For me, the guards were easy to deal with because I followed their rules and checked in with Tunney\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s staff on the train.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-196\" href=\"https:\/\/www.golubphoto.com\/blog\/?attachment_id=196\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-196\" title=\"003_Tunney\" src=\"https:\/\/www.golubphoto.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/003_Tunney1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"771\" height=\"575\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>While on the ground, I used my newly acquired Nikkor 20mm f3.5 lens to get good images from the east side of the train.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-197\" href=\"https:\/\/www.golubphoto.com\/blog\/?attachment_id=197\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-197\" title=\"004_Tunney\" src=\"https:\/\/www.golubphoto.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/004_Tunney.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"441\" height=\"575\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.golubphoto.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/004_Tunney.jpg 441w, https:\/\/www.golubphoto.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/004_Tunney-230x300.jpg 230w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 441px) 100vw, 441px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Burt Lancaster, 1960 Oscar winner for \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Elmer Gantry\u00e2\u20ac\u009d and politically-ahead-of-his-time Hollywood star, was easy to photograph in the \u00e2\u20ac\u0153El Dorado.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d\u00c2\u00a0 I also spotted Rafer Johnson in the \u00e2\u20ac\u0153El Dorado\u00e2\u20ac\u009d but didn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t get to photograph him before I had to go. Kennedy 1968.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d)<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-198\" href=\"https:\/\/www.golubphoto.com\/blog\/?attachment_id=198\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-198\" title=\"005_Tunney\" src=\"https:\/\/www.golubphoto.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/005_Tunney.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"746\" height=\"575\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Before I left the \u00e2\u20ac\u0153El Dorado,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d I got a chance to shoot behind the candidate.\u00c2\u00a0 This 105mm shot into the audience shows the face of Stanislaus County in 1970.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-199\" href=\"https:\/\/www.golubphoto.com\/blog\/?attachment_id=199\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-199\" title=\"006_Tunney\" src=\"https:\/\/www.golubphoto.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/006_Tunney.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"396\" height=\"575\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Took this basic talking head shot of Tunney talking to Fred Youmans.\u00c2\u00a0 You should always shoot lots of portraits and talking head images.\u00c2\u00a0 These images or mugs always become more important later.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-200\" href=\"https:\/\/www.golubphoto.com\/blog\/?attachment_id=200\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-200\" title=\"007_Tunney\" src=\"https:\/\/www.golubphoto.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/007_Tunney.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"535\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I jumped up on the step below the observation deck and held on with one hand while photographing the crowd with the other.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-201\" href=\"https:\/\/www.golubphoto.com\/blog\/?attachment_id=201\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-201\" title=\"008_Tunney\" src=\"https:\/\/www.golubphoto.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/008_Tunney.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"527\" height=\"575\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The protesters and the supporters seem to be having a little pushing match with their campaign signs.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-202\" href=\"https:\/\/www.golubphoto.com\/blog\/?attachment_id=202\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-202\" title=\"009_Tunney\" src=\"https:\/\/www.golubphoto.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/009_Tunney.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"467\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>By the time I got over to the west side of the train, Burt Lancaster was speaking.\u00c2\u00a0 According to the briefing, this meant the train was going to pull out of the station soon.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-203\" href=\"https:\/\/www.golubphoto.com\/blog\/?attachment_id=203\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-203\" title=\"010_Tunney\" src=\"https:\/\/www.golubphoto.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/010_Tunney.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"437\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>While I was behind Tunney on the observation deck, I used the old hands-over-my-head with the 20mm to make this image.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-204\" href=\"https:\/\/www.golubphoto.com\/blog\/?attachment_id=204\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-204\" title=\"011_Tunney\" src=\"https:\/\/www.golubphoto.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/011_Tunney.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"537\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.golubphoto.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/011_Tunney.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.golubphoto.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/011_Tunney-300x201.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As planned, Ted Benson picked me up at the train station and gave me a ride south to Turlock to pick up my car.\u00c2\u00a0 This image was taken a couple years later of the two of us walking together after a similar campaign event.\u00c2\u00a0 Can\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t remember who gave us this transparency.\u00c2\u00a0 The photographer documented our appearance.\u00c2\u00a0 Need I say more?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last week I blogged my 1968 experience with national politics and campaign trains in my blog \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Robert F.
