\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As part of former Alabama Governor George Wallace\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s bid for the U.S. Presidency in 1968, he attempted to get on the California ballot as the candidate of the recently formed American Independent Party.\u00c2\u00a0 His campaign included an appearance in Modesto on November 22, 1967.\u00c2\u00a0 With this blog I will add George Wallace to my <a href=\"http:\/\/algolub.photoshelter.com\/gallery\/Famous-Faces\/G0000w2XaZvecFLg\/\" target=\"_blank\">PhotoShelter Famous Faces<\/a> folder.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.golubphoto.com\/blog\/?attachment_id=319\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-319\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-319\" title=\"002_George Wallace\" src=\"https:\/\/www.golubphoto.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/002_George-Wallace.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"478\" height=\"575\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In 1963, George Wallace was the guy who literally and symbolically blocked the schoolhouse door in adamant opposition to desegregation.\u00c2\u00a0 It took federal marshals and the Deputy Attorney General of the United States to get him to move aside.\u00c2\u00a0 I learned at an early age my family was opposed to segregation and all other forms of discrimination, but I wanted to make an image that showed the true character of Wallace without my personal feelings clouding the issue.\u00c2\u00a0 The minute Wallace started saying things like \u00e2\u20ac\u0153the government needs to quit pussyfooting around\u00e2\u20ac\u009d and referring to \u00e2\u20ac\u0153pointy-headed intellectuals\u00e2\u20ac\u009d my camera started clicking.\u00c2\u00a0 Here are the results.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.golubphoto.com\/blog\/?attachment_id=320\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-320\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-320\" title=\"003_George Wallace\" src=\"https:\/\/www.golubphoto.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/003_George-Wallace.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"501\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Governor\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s entourage was 25 or so people.\u00c2\u00a0 Thirteen of his staff were Alabama State Police and the others were campaign workers including several lawyers and one judge.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.golubphoto.com\/blog\/?attachment_id=321\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-321\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-321\" title=\"004_George Wallace\" src=\"https:\/\/www.golubphoto.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/004_George-Wallace.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"383\" height=\"575\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The news conference was held just before the public meet and greet at the Sandpiper Steak House on McHenry Ave.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.golubphoto.com\/blog\/?attachment_id=322\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-322\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-322\" title=\"005_George Wallace\" src=\"https:\/\/www.golubphoto.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/005_George-Wallace.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"369\" height=\"575\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There wasn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t any TV coverage.\u00c2\u00a0 The only other media present were the Modesto Junior College communications department students.\u00c2\u00a0 They had lots of questions for Wallace but he responded with one-liners and moved through the crowd with his state troopers surrounding him.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.golubphoto.com\/blog\/?attachment_id=324\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-324\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-324\" title=\"006_George Wallace\" src=\"https:\/\/www.golubphoto.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/006_George-Wallace1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"493\" height=\"575\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Just before I left, my eye caught some friends of mine who had more liberal leanings than Wallace.\u00c2\u00a0 They told me they were there to listen and learn.\u00c2\u00a0 In the middle with the cigarette in his mouth is Alan Arnopole, great singer, guitarist, and musical talent.\u00c2\u00a0 I mention him now because later I will do a blog on his great band California
